LOS ANGELES, November 5, 2026 – Netflix has released the official trailer for Unaccustomed Earth, a new drama series inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collection of the same name, ahead of its premiere on December 17.
“Beneath every family tree, secrets take root,” Netflix said in a post on its official X account sharing the trailer, adding that the series “premieres December 17”.
The eight-episode series is set in an interconnected Indian American Bengali community in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where families have grown up alongside one another and friendships stretch across decades. At its centre is Parul Chaudhury, played by Freida Pinto, a devoted wife and mother whose return to Cambridge after five years in Mumbai brings her face to face with Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), the first love she never quite left behind.
According to the official synopsis, Parul sacrificed her college romance to honour her father’s wishes. After a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she moves her family from India back to Cambridge, determined to pursue the life she never lived, and her choices upend the lives of everyone she loves.
The cast also includes Indraneil Sengupta as Parul’s husband Jai, Adi Roy as their son Kaushik, Sarayu Blue as Amit’s sister Ruma, Justin Bartha as her husband Adam, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig as their daughter Hema, Parveen Kaur as Nina, Jayant Kripalani as family patriarch Pranab, and Swayam Bhatia and Palomi Ghosh as Sudha and Anjali Menon.
The series was adapted for the screen by showrunner Madhuri Shekar, whose credits include 3 Body Problem and The Nevers. Lahiri serves as an executive producer alongside Shekar, John Wells, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow and Celia Costas. Ritesh Batra directs and executive produces the first two episodes. The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television and John Wells Productions.
Netflix said the series weaves together characters and stories that originally existed in separate narratives in Lahiri’s 2008 collection into an ongoing saga of love, desire, family and belonging.
“It’s not just Parul, it’s the world,” Pinto told Netflix. “It’s the kind of South Asian American community that we have never seen on television before.”
Pinto rose to international fame with Slumdog Millionaire, while Siddharth is known for Indian films including Rang De Basanti, Bommarillu and Chithha.
All eight episodes of Unaccustomed Earth premiere on December 17, only on Netflix.
