TOKYO, November 5, 2026 – Netflix has unveiled the main trailer and key art for Fool Night, the anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda’s manga and the first-ever collaboration between Japanese animation studios Sunrise and SHAFT, three weeks before all episodes stream worldwide on November 26.
“Live as a flower, or die as a human?” Netflix asked in a post on its official X account, describing the series as “the anime adaptation of the globally popular manga”.
Netflix also announced the series’ theme songs. The opening theme is “Shake! spit out” by Tempalay, while the ending theme is “iki” by Nowlu.
Fool Night is set in a distant future where thick clouds cover the sky and most of the planet’s vegetation has withered away, leaving humanity facing a serious oxygen shortage. A technology called Transfloration implants seeds in the bodies of people near death, transforming them into plants that provide a meagre supply of oxygen.
The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a poor young man whose harsh upbringing has robbed him of hope, who decides to undergo Transfloration. At Transflora Medical he runs into his childhood friend Yomiko Horai, who works there. After the procedure, Toshiro gains the ability to hear the voices of “Spiriflora”, humans who have been turned into plants, and is hired as a special temporary worker. When a series of murders is committed by a Spiriflor, he is drawn into an investigation that becomes far more complex than anyone expected.
Sunrise is known for franchises including Cowboy Bebop and Gundam, while SHAFT is behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series. The series is directed by Atsushi Yukawa, with series composition by Jin Tanaka, character design by Robert Sato and music by Tatsuya Kato.
The original manga is serialised in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior. According to Netflix, it ranked in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 and won Best Suspense Manga at the Japan Expo Awards in 2023.
Japanese voice cast members confirmed so far include Kouki Uchiyama as Toshiro and Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko.
According to anime news site Anime.com, the main promotional video runs to the opening theme and shows Yomiko explaining the transformation of people into plants, unrest among opponents of the system and a first look at the character Ivy. The key visual shows Toshiro, Yomiko, Akira Yatsuka, Saeko Kanaeno and Jin Hiragishi beneath a sky covered in dark clouds. A street piano exhibition tied to the release will run at Tokyo Midtown from November 27 to 29.
All episodes of Fool Night start streaming worldwide on Netflix on November 26.
