KARAKIT, PULAU BANGGI, SABAH May 9, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today unveiled a major development package worth more than RM33 million aimed at uplifting living standards and addressing long-overdue basic needs for residents of Pulau Banggi, one of Malaysia’s northernmost and most isolated islands.
Speaking at an event in Karakit, Anwar said the initiatives demonstrate the MADANI government’s commitment to ensuring that even the most remote communities are not left behind.
“Alhamdulillah, while addressing the gathering in Karakit, I announced the implementation of several initiatives totalling more than RM33 million to uplift the welfare of the people and fulfil the basic needs that the residents of Pulau Banggi have long awaited,” he stated via his official X account.
The package includes a special allocation of over RM31 million from the MADANI Government and the Prime Minister’s Department. These funds will support multiple basic infrastructure projects already underway or in the pipeline, including:
- Upgrading roads and bridges in several villages, including Kampung Limbuak Laut, Kapitangan, Damaran and Bayangan Laut
- Upgrading the Pulau Banggi Police Station
- Improving the Karakit Health Clinic
- Upgrading school dormitories in Banggi and Balambangan
- National security and defence projects
- Upgrading the Karakit Public Jetty into a Ferry Terminal
In addition, Anwar announced a further RM2.25 million in new allocations:
- RM1.25 million for education programmes, institutional empowerment, green technology, health and human development under the Minister’s Office in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs)
- RM1 million to upgrade the jetty in Kampung Dogoton, benefiting local villagers and enforcement agencies
The Prime Minister emphasised that the investments go beyond physical infrastructure.
“Insya-Allah, these efforts are not merely about improving basic facilities, but ensuring that the people in this remote island enjoy fairer, more comfortable and dignified development,” he said.
“Remote, but never neglected. That is my promise.”
Pulau Banggi, located off the northern coast of Sabah, has historically faced challenges due to its isolation. The new projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity, security, healthcare, education and economic opportunities for its communities.
The move aligns with the government’s #MalaysiaMADANI and #MADANIbekerja agenda, which prioritises inclusive and equitable development across all regions of the country.
