CEBU, Philippines May 8, 2026 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday (May 7, 2026) highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to deeper regional integration as he presented the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 during the Special BIMP-EAGA Summit held alongside the 48th ASEAN Summit here
In an official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar described the first day in Cebu as productive, noting two key highlights: the presentation of the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 at the special summit and fruitful bilateral meetings with the leaders of Laos and Singapore.
“Vision 2035 is not merely a policy document, but a reflection of our shared determination to build a region that is more resilient, competitive and people-centred,” Anwar was quoted as saying in accompanying graphics released with his post.
The BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) Vision 2035 focuses on sustainable development, expanded trade and investment, enhanced digital infrastructure, food security, and greater use of renewable energy. It aims to ensure that remote and underdeveloped areas in the sub-region are not left behind through stronger connectivity and inclusive growth.
Anwar emphasised that the vision must be driven by “togetherness, sustainable governance, and ensuring no one is marginalised,” reinforcing Malaysia’s resolve to expand economic cooperation while maintaining regional stability and peace.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who co-chaired the BIMP-EAGA Summit, echoed similar sentiments, describing the Vision 2035 as “a promise to ensure that development is meaningful, sustainable and felt in the daily lives of the people in the region.”
Anwar arrived in Cebu on May 7 for a two-day working visit to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings under the Philippines’ chairship. On Friday (May 8), he is expected to participate in the main ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting.
The 48th ASEAN Summit, hosted in Cebu from May 6 to 8, focuses on themes of agility, unity, and addressing global challenges through stronger partnerships and connectivity.
Anwar’s participation underscores Malaysia’s active role in advancing sub-regional cooperation within the broader ASEAN
