KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 2026 (Bernama) – The dream of seeing the national sepak takraw squad end its 38-year championship drought in the team regu was shattered after they lost to traditional rivals, Thailand, 0-2 in the final of the 2026 Thai King’s Cup today.
In the final at the Fashion Island Mall, Bangkok, Ahmad Jais Baharun’s men once again failed to break the dominance of the White Elephants that has continued to haunt the country’s sepak takraw for the past three decades.
The last time Malaysia lifted the team regu championship in the Thai King’s Cup was at the 1988 edition.
Earlier, Malaysia’s combination of Muhammad Zarif Marican Ibrahim Marican, Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin and Kamarul Ezzad Kamarul Imran failed to give the country its first point when they lost 0-2 (7-15, 11-15).
The second regu, consisting of Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam, Hafizul Hayazi Adnan and Zuleffendi Sumari also failed to extend the battle after losing the first set 9-15, before being trounced 12-15 by the Thai trio of Kritsanapong Nontakote, Tanaphon Sapyen and Wuttinun Kamsanor.
