PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 2026 — More than 1,000 new identity cards (IC) have been issued at the Putrajaya branch of the National Registration Department (JPN) today, marking the rollout of the redesigned MyKad.
The new card comes with a revamped design: the photo has been moved to the left side, while the chip and QR code are now placed on the back.
Made with a polycarbonate layer, the card is built to be more durable than its predecessor. The security features, including ultraviolet elements and a dynamic hologram, as well as NFC support for contactless data reading.
JPN said the switch is not compulsory — existing MyKad cards remain valid and can continue to be used as normal. The changeover will be carried out in phases, with no mass replacement required.
The new MyKad is being introduced first at JPN headquarters in Putrajaya and select branches by appointment, before being expanded to other locations nationwide.
Applications for the new MyKad opened today at more than 40 JPN branches across the country. JPN has not issued any directive requiring the full replacement of existing cards.
