VERONA, ITALY April 14, 2026 – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced that her government will suspend the automatic renewal of Italy’s defense agreement with Israel amid the ongoing regional tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Verona, Meloni stated: “In view of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel.”
The agreement in question stems from a 2003 Memorandum of Understanding between Rome and Tel Aviv that covers military cooperation, including the exchange of military equipment, technology research, and joint defense initiatives. The pact was set for automatic renewal around this period unless actively suspended.
The move comes as Italy seeks to maintain strategic autonomy while navigating escalating conflicts involving Israel, Iran, and related developments in the region, including recent strikes and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Meloni has previously emphasized that Italy will not be drawn into broader conflicts between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
This decision marks a notable shift in Italy’s traditionally strong ties with Israel on defense matters and is being closely watched for its potential impact on European-Middle East relations and Mediterranean security dynamics.
The announcement was widely reported by international outlets including ANSA, China Daily, Hindustan Times, and Al Arabiya, shortly after Meloni’s remarks.
No immediate comment has been issued by the Israeli government or the Israeli Embassy in Rome.
