WASHINGTON D.C May 15, 2026 — Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their fragile ceasefire by an additional 45 days, the U.S. State Department announced Friday following two days of direct talks in Washington.
The extension builds on the original cessation of hostilities that took effect on April 16, 2026, initially set for 10 days and later extended. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott described the latest round of negotiations as “highly productive” and said the truce will continue “to enable further progress” toward a more permanent agreement.
“The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days,” Pigott stated. The agreement comes as both sides engage in parallel diplomatic tracks, with political negotiations scheduled for June 2-3 at the State Department and security discussions set to begin later this month at the Pentagon.
Key issues under discussion include border security arrangements, the disarmament of Hezbollah forces south of the Litani River, and steps to restore Lebanese sovereignty in the south. U.S. officials have expressed cautious optimism that the breathing room will allow for substantive talks on long-term stability.
Despite the extension, violence has not fully ceased. Israeli strikes continued in southern Lebanon on Friday, with the military saying it targeted Hezbollah positions. Lebanese officials and media have reported civilian casualties and ongoing incidents since the April truce began, raising questions about compliance on the ground.
Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Supporters view the extension as a necessary step to prevent escalation and create space for diplomacy. Critics, however, describe it as a temporary patch that fails to address core disputes and note repeated alleged violations by both sides.
The ceasefire originally emerged from U.S.-mediated efforts under President Donald Trump to de-escalate the conflict that intensified earlier in 2026. Further rounds of talks are expected in the coming weeks as mediators push for a more durable resolution.
This latest extension is set to run until early July, barring any new agreement or breakdown.
