TEHRAN August 18, 2026 – Iranian forces have seized a UAE-owned oil tanker near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media reports citing the semi-official Fars News Agency.
The vessel was detained while crossing the strategic waterway, with maritime navigation data confirming it had been stopped during its passage. Fars News did not name the tanker or the specific Emirati company that owns it. The agency stated that tankers seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz must follow a route designated by Iran, pay service fees, and obtain Iranian authorization.
Qeshm Island, located near the northern entrance to the strait, serves as a major Iranian military and commercial hub. No official statements from Iranian or Emirati authorities had been issued regarding the incident as of the latest reports.
The seizure occurs amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s seaborne oil supplies typically passes. In recent weeks, the United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of multiple attacks on vessels linked to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), including incidents involving missiles and projectiles. Abu Dhabi has described those actions as unprovoked violations of international law.
The reported detention adds to a series of maritime incidents in the waterway during the ongoing regional conflict, raising further concerns about disruptions to commercial shipping and global energy markets.
