Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro says he has been banned from leaving Brazil and ordered to surrender his passports following his defeat in the country’s presidential election, BRICS News reported in a post on X on October 27, 2026.
“Flávio Bolsonaro says he has been banned from leaving Brazil and ordered to surrender his passports following his election defeat,” BRICS News wrote.
The order was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the same judge who oversaw the coup trial of the senator’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, according to The Guardian and Brazil’s G1. It came just hours after Mr Bolsonaro lost the runoff on Sunday, October 25, to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
According to G1, Justice Moraes’s ruling cancelled all of Mr Bolsonaro’s Brazilian passports, including his diplomatic passport, ordered him to hand over any passports from other nationalities within 24 hours, and barred him from contacting lawyer Willer Tomaz. The decision was made in a case in which Mr Bolsonaro and Mr Tomaz are being investigated for alleged money laundering in a suspected scheme involving companies linked to Mr Tomaz and betting firms. Both men say they are friends but deny being business partners or any wrongdoing.
CBN reported that the ruling responded to a petition from lawmakers Lindbergh Farias and Rogério Corrêa, who argued there was a risk that the senator could flee the country.
In a video posted on social media on Monday, October 26, Mr Bolsonaro said he had been notified by the Federal Police as he left a visit to his father, who is under house arrest. “I was ordered right on the street to hand over my passports, and I’m also prohibited from leaving the country,” he said, according to Reuters. He said the decision was based on remarks made on October 23 by his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who said on a podcast in the United States that Flávio should leave Brazil if he lost the election. “I never said that,” the senator added.
Mr Bolsonaro said he would comply with the order while challenging it. “I never thought about leaving the country. I will hand over my passports and I will defend myself against this aberration,” he said, as quoted by CNN, describing the measure as “a clear attempt to intimidate me”.
Mr Bolsonaro is also formally under investigation by the Federal Police over the possible financing of “Dark Horse”, a film about his father’s career, G1 reported. As a senator, he has the right to be tried before the Supreme Federal Court, though his term ends in 2027.
Lula won a fourth term with 51.79 per cent of the vote. Mr Bolsonaro initially refused to accept the result and said he would seek its annulment over a court-ordered extension of voting hours, but later backed away from that call. His Liberal Party said on Monday night that it recognised the result proclaimed by the electoral court, while maintaining that questions raised should be “properly clarified”.
The passport order adds to the legal pressure on the Bolsonaro family. Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup after his own defeat by Lula in 2022.
