Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has been handing out Deepavali contributions across his Lembah Pantai constituency, with about 1,600 families set to receive RM150 vouchers to help them prepare for the Festival of Lights.
In a post shared on X on the night of Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Fahmi, who is the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, said he had handed over Deepavali contributions at Taman Seri Sentosa, part of the aid to be delivered to 1,600 families throughout the constituency. He opened the post with the Tamil greeting “Deepavali Nal Vazhthukkal!” and shared a video of the event.
“Semoga sumbangan ini dapat menambah keceriaan dan memeriahkan lagi sambutan bersama keluarga tersayang,” he wrote, which translates as “May these contributions add to the joy and liven up the celebrations with your loved ones.”
Vouchers redeemable at local supermarkets
Speaking to reporters after the Taman Seri Sentosa ceremony, Fahmi said the first phase of the distribution involved more than 300 recipients, with the rest to be handed out at several other locations in the constituency, Bernama reported. The vouchers can be redeemed at several supermarkets within Lembah Pantai. A Bernama photograph carried by The Sun showed Fahmi delivering a speech to members of the Indian community at the aid presentation ceremony for Taman Seri Sentosa residents.
“I hope this will help them prepare for and celebrate Deepavali in a joyful atmosphere, while easing some of the cost-of-living pressures by helping them purchase essential items,” he said, as quoted by Bernama.
Bernama later reported that about 600 Lembah Pantai residents received their Deepavali vouchers on the night of October 28 at IWK Eco Park, Pantai Dalam, in a programme organised by the Lembah Pantai MP’s office together with MinnalFM. Fahmi attended to greet the recipients, joined by the Communications Ministry’s Deputy Secretary-General (Telecommunications Infrastructure), Mano Verabathran, and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. Fahmi reposted the Bernama report and, in a further video post on October 29, again wished recipients a joyful celebration with family and friends.
Budget 2027 measures for the Indian community
At the Taman Seri Sentosa event, Fahmi also highlighted Budget 2027 initiatives for the Indian community. He said the Budget allocated RM150 million in business financing through Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) and TEKUN Nasional, and RM150 million for the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA), which he described as an increase.
“Much of the feedback I received concerned applications for grants or assistance from MITRA. This involves access; I will convey this feedback to Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, the minister responsible for MITRA,” he said, according to Bernama. He added that the community also benefits from direct aid such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) and assistance to repair Tamil national-type schools (SJKT).
Fahmi also said he had obtained approval from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to replace the faulty lift at the AC4 Flat in Taman Sri Sentosa, with work scheduled to begin early next year, Bernama reported.
