KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 1, 2025 – The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has called for a six-month extension of service for Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who are set to retire today and tomorrow, respectively. The proposal, discussed during a recent Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, aligns with the Federal Constitution and recognizes the judges’ exemplary performance and integrity.

DAP emphasized that while extensions are not automatic, precedents exist for senior judges receiving post-retirement extensions. The party sees no reason to deviate from this practice, citing the judges’ significant contributions to judicial reforms and the development of Malaysia’s judiciary—a key priority of the Madani government.

“The extension is not about politicizing the issue but genuinely acknowledging their role in strengthening the judiciary,” DAP stated, highlighting the need to maintain public confidence in the institution.

The party also noted upcoming vacancies in the Federal Court due to recent and impending retirements, underscoring the importance of retaining experienced leadership to ensure a smooth transition during new judicial appointments.

DAP believes extending the tenures of Tengku Maimun and Abang Iskandar would reinforce the government’s commitment to enhancing justice administration, with merit as the primary criterion for judicial appointments and extensions. The party reiterated that this move supports the Madani government’s reform agenda and aims to bolster trust in the judiciary.
