KUALA LUMPUR April 13, 2026 – Central Executive Committee (CEC) DAP member and Buntong State Assemblyman (ADUN) Thulsi Manogaran today corrected the irresponsible narrative that has twisted the statement by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke on penalties for drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
In a media statement titled “Drunk Driving Issue: YB Loke’s Statement Twisted, DAP Remains Firm in Demanding the Heaviest Punishment”, Thulsi rejected claims that Loke or DAP leaders were trying to “defend” drunk drivers.
“This is a baseless accusation that is completely out of context,” she stressed.
According to Thulsi, Loke’s remark that “there is no need for the death penalty” refers to the fact that existing laws are already sufficient and there is no need to amend the Road Transport Act 1987.
“If there is an element of ‘intention’ or premeditation as claimed by some parties, the prosecution already has full authority to charge drunk drivers under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder), which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, or Section 304 (causing death by intentional act). The existing laws are already strict enough. What matters is firm enforcement and prosecution,” she explained.
She also referred to the official resolution from the CEC DAP meeting on April 6, 2026, which clearly states the party’s support for tough government action.
“Item 5 in that media statement clearly declares that DAP supports firm and harsh action by the government against drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol who cause death, without fear or favour, to send a strong message to all drivers to always be responsible for the safety of everyone on the road,” she said.
As a CEC member, Thulsi reaffirmed his firm personal stance.
“The heaviest possible punishment must be imposed on any individual who drives while intoxicated and takes the life of an innocent person. There is no compromise for offenders,” she declared.
She advised the public to examine the legal facts objectively and not be easily swayed by parties that politicise the issue of lives and road safety.
“DAP will continue to support any government measures to ensure our roads are safe from the threat of drunk drivers,” added Thulsi Manogaran.
The statement was issued following the controversy that arose after Anthony Loke’s recent remarks were misinterpreted by certain quarters.
