PUTRAJAYA, May 29, 2026 – Malaysia’s Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, has highlighted the critical role of journalists as defenders of truth in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly and perception often overshadows reality.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) today, coinciding with National Journalists’ Day (Hari Wartawan Nasional), Fahmi praised media practitioners for their responsibility in verifying information and upholding public trust.
“Journalists stand at the forefront as a bulwark defending the integrity of information. Their role is not limited to merely recording events. They also serve as an important voice in upholding truth when society faces confusion and speculation,” he said.
Fahmi stressed that every piece of news requires thorough research, verification, and a high sense of responsibility, as public trust is earned through honesty, transparency, and consistent dedication.
“When integrity is held as a principle and truth becomes the priority, journalists will continue to stand as a bastion of authentic information. Journalism is not just about delivering news, but about preserving trust and safeguarding credibility,” he added.
The minister concluded his message with: “Selamat Hari Wartawan Nasional” (Happy National Journalists’ Day). The post was accompanied by an official graphic from the Ministry of Communications.
This year’s National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026 celebrations, themed “Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility,” will culminate on June 20 in Penang. The event is expected to gather around 1,000 media practitioners and will be officiated by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Fahmi’s message underscores the government’s ongoing emphasis on responsible journalism amid challenges posed by digital misinformation.
