MCMC Probes Fake News and 3R Content in Zara Qairina Case

CYBERJAYA, Malaysia, Aug 10, 2025 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating the spread of false and sensitive content on social media related to the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. The content, deemed to involve 3R issues (race, religion, and royalty), is believed to potentially cause public confusion and hinder ongoing police investigations.

On August 9, 2025, the individual responsible for the content was summoned to provide a statement at the Cheras District Police Headquarters. Authorities seized one mobile phone and one SIM card to aid the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years in prison, or both upon conviction.

MCMC urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, warning that such actions could distress the victim’s family, violate ethical standards, and disrupt the pursuit of justice. The commission emphasized the importance of allowing authorities to conduct their investigations without interference.
