The hour-long meeting this morning saw Thailand and Cambodia express gratitude for Malaysia’s leadership under the Prime Minister in securing a peace initiative agreed upon on 28 July. Both countries reiterated their commitment to the peace mission, solidified through Malaysia’s hosting of the GBC talks. A joint press release issued by the parties underscored a unified message of dedication to peace, emphasizing trust, respect, and bilateral cooperation.

Saifuddin highlighted that the bilateral mechanism adopted remains effective for now, with consensus among ASEAN leaders—contacted by the Prime Minister—that Malaysia should continue its facilitative role. All ASEAN heads of state expressed strong support for Malaysia’s efforts in maintaining regional stability through dialogue and non-confrontation, in line with ASEAN’s principles of consensus, mutual respect, and non-interference.

“Today’s discussions reflect a shared understanding that a ceasefire is not just a pause but a promise—a promise to protect lives, uphold dignity, and prevent further suffering,” Saifuddin stated. He emphasized that this commitment requires effective monitoring and sincere political will from both sides, which has been evident throughout the meetings.

Malaysia takes pride in its role as a mediator, with both Thailand and Cambodia demonstrating seriousness and goodwill. The Minister noted that the talks, involving defence ministers and delegations, adhered to ASEAN’s principles of trust and respect, further strengthening regional unity.

As the host, Malaysia expressed its honor in supporting the peace process and pledged continued assistance in facilitating dialogue, building confidence, and supporting mechanisms to monitor the ceasefire. Further rounds of GBC meetings are anticipated to sustain these efforts.

Saifuddin concluded, “We are proud to contribute to this peace initiative and deeply value the commitment shown by both nations.”
