KYIV, UKRAINE July 6, 2026 – Russian forces launched a major missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv in the early hours of Monday, striking residential areas with ballistic missiles.
The attack began around 1:40 a.m. local time, with further explosions reported around 2:10 a.m. and 3:15 a.m. Ukrainian air raid sirens sounded across much of the country as waves of missiles — including ballistic types — and drones approached the city.
Ukrainian officials reported:
- At least 8 people killed (7 in Kyiv city and 1 in the surrounding Kyiv Oblast)
- 34 people injured (24 in the city and 10 in the oblast)
A residential building in the Podilskyi district was partially destroyed, with significant damage to floors 5 through 9 and part of the facade collapsing. Rescue teams are searching for people trapped under rubble. Other multi-story residential buildings were also hit in Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts. Additional damage was reported to non-residential buildings, garages, and warehouses.
The strike occurred just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in his Sunday evening address that Russian forces were preparing another large-scale attack on the capital. It follows a major Russian barrage on July 2 that killed at least 31 people in Kyiv.
The attack comes on the eve of a NATO summit scheduled to begin Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, which U.S. President Donald Trump plans to attend.
This developing story is based on the breaking report from @BRICSinfo and confirmed by Ukrainian officials and international news outlets. Casualty figures and damage assessments are expected to be updated as rescue operations continue.
