SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 2026 — The 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) concluded tonight with a simple yet spirited closing ceremony at Aneka Walk, SA Sentral, where host state Selangor was crowned overall champion.
Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, representing the Sultan of Selangor, declared the Games closed. He was joined by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Selangor finished with 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, securing its 10th overall title in SUKMA history. Federal Territories placed second with 51 gold medals, followed by Terengganu and Sarawak.
Pahang shooter Cheah Zen Hong, 20, was named Best Male Athlete after winning nine gold medals and one silver. Selangor swimmer Eliza Tan Ai Shen, 19, claimed the Best Female Athlete award with a clean sweep of seven gold medals and a new national record of 56.78 seconds in the women’s 100m freestyle.
In a social media post, Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for Tengku Amir Shah’s presence and congratulated the organisers, athletes and officials. He noted that SUKMA, first held in 1986, stemmed from an idea he conceived while serving as Youth and Sports Minister in 1983. He described the Games as a platform that continues to unite young talent from across Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
Amirudin Shari announced that September 1 will be a special public holiday in Selangor to celebrate the contingent’s success and thank the athletes and approximately 10,000 volunteers.
The Games, held from 15 to 24 August, featured more than 13,000 athletes and officials competing in 37 sports across numerous venues in the state. The baton now passes to Kelantan, which will host the next edition in 2028.
