KAZAN, RUSSIA June 18, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered Malaysia’s national statement at the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit here, emphasizing dialogue, diplomacy, and international law as essential tools for resolving geopolitical conflicts.
The summit, held on 17-18 June 2026, marks 35 years of dialogue partnership between ASEAN and Russia. Anwar highlighted the need to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, digital economy, science and technology, artificial intelligence (AI), energy, food security, the halal industry, and people-to-people exchanges to deliver mutual benefits in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
In his statement, Anwar stressed: “Dialog and diplomacy must continue to be the foundation in addressing various conflicts and geopolitical tensions. Malaysia remains committed that lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation, understanding, and respect for international law.”
He also addressed developments in West Asia, reiterating Malaysia’s longstanding position on the Gaza conflict. Anwar called for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the protection of Palestinians’ right to self-determination. Malaysia further condemned the expansion of Israeli military actions into Lebanon and any attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Anwar expressed confidence that ASEAN and Russia have vast potential to enhance collaboration based on mutual respect, shared benefits, and a joint commitment to global peace, stability, and prosperity.
The event featured a high-level plenary session with leaders from ASEAN member states and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bilateral meetings, including between Anwar and Putin, also explored opportunities in energy security, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and agriculture.
This engagement underscores Malaysia’s pragmatic foreign policy approach, balancing regional priorities with broader international partnerships amid ongoing global challenges. Analysts note the summit reflects ASEAN’s commitment to centrality and dialogue with major powers.
