NEW YORK CITY June 14, 2026 — Shaky video footage captured late Wednesday night shows New York Police Department mounted officers on horseback maneuvering through dense crowds of celebrating New York Knicks fans in Midtown Manhattan, with reports of fireworks being set off nearby prompting renewed calls for accountability.
The clip, shared widely on social media by independent journalist Nick Sortor, depicts several mounted NYPD units in riot gear advancing down city streets amid throngs of fans. Horses appear agitated at times amid the noise and lights, with the poster claiming rioters launched fireworks directly at the animals, causing them to spook and jump. Sortor urged authorities to pursue serious felony charges, describing the actions as attacks on police horses.
The scenes unfolded following the Knicks’ dramatic 107-106 comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals on June 10 — widely hailed as one of the largest comebacks in Finals history. An estimated 10,000 fans flooded the streets around Madison Square Garden, turning what began as jubilant celebrations into disorder.
According to the NYPD, the unrest included:
- Fireworks and smoke bombs ignited in dense crowds
- Fights breaking out among fans
- People climbing scaffolding, light poles, and vehicles (including attempts to flip a taxi)
- Damage to police cars, Citibikes, and street signs
- Objects thrown at officers and bystanders
Officials reported 56 people taken into custody — 15 arrests and 41 summonses — with charges ranging from assault on a police officer and reckless endangerment to criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Ten NYPD officers were injured, including one struck in the head with a glass bottle.
Mounted units were deployed alongside officers in riot gear to help disperse crowds and restore order. Police horses are trained for crowd control but remain vulnerable in chaotic urban environments with pyrotechnics and large, unpredictable groups.
While the viral video captures the tense atmosphere and horses reacting to the surroundings, some observers noted it does not clearly show fireworks being thrown directly at the animals. Broader coverage confirms fireworks were set off repeatedly in the area during the celebrations.
This is not the first instance of rowdy behavior during the Knicks’ Finals run. Previous watch parties also saw arrests, injuries, and property damage, leading to tightened security measures around MSG.
The Knicks organization and city officials have emphasized the excitement of the playoff run while stressing the need for safe celebrations. As the series continues, authorities are preparing for potential further crowds in what has become a high-stakes postseason for the franchise.
