PUTRAJAYA April 14, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday announced comprehensive steps decided by the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) to manage the worsening global energy crisis, which is expected to be prolonged.
In a statement on his official X account (@anwaribrahim), the Prime Minister stressed that protecting the well-being of the rakyat remains the government’s top priority, while ensuring all actions are disciplined and realistic.
“The main approach now is to guarantee the supply of energy and essential goods so that daily life is not disrupted,” he said.
This is being driven by PETRONAS and early planning to secure sufficient supplies in the months ahead.
To cushion the impact of rising costs, the government is strengthening support with additional diesel subsidies for paddy farmers (pesawah), cultivators (petani), smallholders (pekebun kecil), and individual vehicle owners.
Demand management is also being enhanced through greater energy efficiency. Public sector employees will begin Work-From-Home arrangements starting tomorrow (April 15, 2026).
At the same time, Ops Tiris has been intensified to crack down on fuel leaks and smuggling that could threaten the country’s oil supply.
For the medium- and long-term, the government is accelerating the shift to renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on volatile imported fuels.
In the near term, biodiesel has been identified as the most practical solution. The blending ratio will be gradually increased to B15 using existing infrastructure, allowing immediate action while new systems are fully developed.
“With a strong industrial base and domestic capacity, these measures will not only stabilise current supplies but also build the nation’s energy resilience, ensuring the people’s lives remain protected amid global uncertainties,” Anwar said.
He concluded with confidence that Malaysia will overcome the challenge “with determination, discipline and togetherness.”
The MTEN meeting was held today and attended by senior ministers and officials. Official photographs from the session were released alongside the Prime Minister’s statement.
