KUALA LUMPUR April 14, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed Malaysia’s deepest condolences following the death of iconic Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, describing her passing as “a great loss to the world of music and culture.”
In a statement posted on his official X account today, the Prime Minister praised Bhosle’s extraordinary contributions, noting how her voice united emotions, traditions, and history through thousands of songs that resonated across generations.
“As a singer, she has united emotions, traditions, and history through thousands of works spanning generations. Her unique voice, full of soul and energy, has brought to life the silver screen and dramas that fill the hearts of millions of people around the world,” Anwar wrote in Malay.
He also highlighted Bhosle’s role as the younger sister of the late Lata Mangeshkar, crediting her with elevating her family’s rich artistic legacy while forging her own distinctive path. Anwar lauded her courage to experiment and remain relevant amid constant change, saying she did “more than just ordinary, not ‘mediocre’.”
“Malaysia records the highest condolences to her family and all art lovers who also feel her loss. May her legacy continue to ignite and become an inspiration to the next generation in enriching the world of music and culture,” he added.
The statement was accompanied by a black-and-white Reuters portrait of the late singer.
Bhosle, aged 92, passed away on April 12, 2026, in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital due to multi-organ failure following hospitalisation for a chest infection and extreme exhaustion.
Known as one of Bollywood’s most versatile and prolific voices, she recorded thousands of songs over an eight-decade career that spanned multiple languages and genres, earning global acclaim and numerous honours including the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Her death has drawn tributes from leaders and artists worldwide.
The Prime Minister’s message underscores Malaysia’s appreciation for Bhosle’s enduring cultural impact beyond India’s borders.
