PUTRAJAYA April 14, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sent warm wishes to Malaysia’s Tamil, Sikh and Malayalee communities as they celebrate the Chithirai New Year, Hari Vaisakhi and Vishu.
In a message posted on X today, 14 April 2026, the Prime Minister congratulated all celebrants and underscored the role of cultural diversity in strengthening national unity.
The message was also published in Tamil script, reflecting the government’s inclusive approach. Anwar attached a colourful official poster featuring the Malaysian coat of arms, traditional dancers and cultural symbols representing the three festivals, together with the #MalaysiaMADANI branding.
Significance of the Festivals
- Chithirai (Puthandu) marks the Tamil New Year and the beginning of the Tamil calendar, traditionally observed with kolam decorations, special meals and temple visits.
- Vaisakhi is both the Sikh New Year and a major harvest festival, celebrated with prayers at gurdwaras and colourful processions.
- Vishu is the traditional Malayalee New Year, known for the Vishu Kani (auspicious first sight) ritual and family feasts.
All three festivals fall in mid-April and highlight the rich multicultural tapestry of Malaysian society, where Indian-origin communities form an integral part of the national fabric.
The Prime Minister’s greeting comes as part of the ongoing Malaysia MADANI initiative, which promotes unity, respect and shared prosperity across all ethnic and religious groups.
