KAJANG, SELANGOR, MALAYSIA March 16, 2026 – In a significant development amid Malaysia’s political landscape, former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has formally appealed to rejoin the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), with Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi personally accepting the submission.
The appeal was handed over during a meeting on the 26th night of Ramadan, as announced by Zahid on his official X account earlier today. Zahid, who also serves as UMNO president and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, described the moment as embodying the spirit of “Rumah Bangsa” – an initiative aimed at reuniting estranged members and strengthening party unity.
In his post, Zahid expressed optimism about the reconciliation, stating that he has accepted the appeal personally and will forward it to the Rumah Bangsa Unity Committee, chaired by Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, for further review and endorsement. He emphasized the importance of unity over division, quoting a Malay proverb: “Biduk lalu, kiambang bertaut” (the boat passes, the water hyacinths entwine), symbolizing the mending of past rifts.
“This is one of the true meanings of Rumah Bangsa – an effort to reunite those who have separated, to bring closer those who have been distant, and to gather us again in one big family of struggle,” Zahid wrote. He added that the initiative could help restore UMNO’s strength as the leading political force for Malays and the Muslim community in Malaysia.
Khairy, a prominent figure known for his roles as former Minister of Health and Minister of Youth and Sports, was expelled from UMNO in January 2023 alongside other members critical of the party leadership. His departure followed internal conflicts, including his vocal opposition during the 2022 general election campaign. Since then, Khairy has remained active in public discourse, hosting a podcast and engaging in media commentary.
The appeal comes at a time when UMNO is seeking to consolidate its position within the unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Analysts suggest this move could signal broader efforts to heal factional divides and bolster the party’s appeal ahead of future elections.
Photos shared in Zahid’s post depict the two leaders smiling as Khairy presents the appeal letter in what appears to be a modest office setting adorned with Islamic calligraphy. No immediate response from Khairy’s side was available, but the development has sparked discussions on social media about potential shifts in UMNO’s internal dynamics.
As of now, the Rumah Bangsa committee’s decision remains pending, with Zahid expressing hope that it will foster greater party cohesion. “Hopefully Rumah Bangsa becomes the basis for us to reunite hearts that have been separated, to strengthen the ranks of struggle,” he concluded.
