ANKARA, TURKEY January 7, 2026
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a public lecture in Ankara titled “Power Shift: Strategic Choices for Malaysia and Türkiye”, emphasizing the need for both nations to strengthen strategic cooperation in a rapidly changing global landscape marked by shifts in economy, security, technology, and international governance.
In his address, Anwar highlighted the inadequacy of existing global orders amid rising challenges. He positioned Malaysia and Türkiye as potential “balancing voices” against what he described as the hypocrisy of major powers, particularly on issues such as the ongoing oppression in Gaza and the conflict in Venezuela.
“Developing countries must realize that their future does not necessarily depend on any single great power,” Anwar stated, calling for greater independence in international relations.
On technological advancement, the Prime Minister stressed that progress in artificial intelligence must be guided by human values and wisdom to empower people, rather than exacerbate inequalities or undermine human dignity.
Anwar also criticized the selective application of international law, declaring that atrocities in Gaza “cannot be normalized or set as a precedent.” He affirmed that Malaysia and Türkiye would continue to speak out, take action, and demand justice.
Concluding his remarks, Anwar underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation: “In a world fraught with power rivalries, Malaysia and Türkiye must bolster strategic ties, uphold shared principles, and ensure that law constrains power—not the reverse.”
The lecture comes as part of efforts to deepen relations between the two nations, with Anwar sharing photos from the event on his official X account, showing him addressing a formal audience in an elegant conference hall.
The speech aligns with Malaysia’s MADANI policy framework, promoting principled diplomacy and global equity.
