Controversy Over Setiawangsa MPP Appointments: Nik Nazmi Calls It ‘Odd’, Afdlin Shauki Appointed Chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Oct 23, 2025 – Setiawangsa Member of Parliament, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, today expressed surprise over the appointment of members to the Setiawangsa Zone Residents’ Representation Council (MPP), which was made based on recommendations from PKR Setiawangsa Branch Chief Afdlin Shauki, rather than proposed by him as the elected representative.

In a statement issued, Nik Nazmi emphasized that this action is “quite odd” given that he is not an opposition MP, and such appointments could undermine the relationship between the MPP and the Setiawangsa Parliament Service Centre.

The MPP, which falls under the supervision of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), serves as the primary link between local residents and the government, particularly in voicing community issues and needs.

According to Nik Nazmi, previous MPP appointments were always recommended by the Setiawangsa MP, covering representatives from residents’ associations, mosque or surau committees, non-Muslim places of worship, as well as members of Unity Government political parties. He said this approach facilitates the community because elected representatives have a direct mandate from voters, not merely from the party.

“For this session, the MPP appointments were selected from the list of PKR Setiawangsa Branch Chief Afdlin Shauki and no longer through the MP. He himself has been appointed as Chairman of the Setiawangsa Zone MPP,” Nik Nazmi wrote in his statement.

He also revealed his personal experience: Throughout his two terms as Setiawangsa MP, MPP members were not appointed from his recommended list only during the 33 months he served as an opposition MP.

Nik Nazmi claimed that, to his knowledge, aside from three PKR MPs – Setiawangsa, Wangsa Maju, and Batu – who lost in party branch elections, other government MPs are still empowered to submit recommendation lists to the Minister.

“In this regard, any decisions or actions made by the Setiawangsa MPP are not related to the Setiawangsa Parliament Service Centre,” he added, while inviting Setiawangsa residents to contact them via email at parlimen@niknazmi.com or the hotline +60 18-264 0065 for related matters.

Nevertheless, Nik Nazmi reaffirmed his commitment to his constituency. “Just as I have strived to provide the best service since 2018 as a government-supporting elected representative, backbencher, and Minister, through thick and thin, I will continue to work for the people of Setiawangsa and together with all government stakeholders and the community,” he said.

This statement comes amid the Unity Government’s efforts to strengthen grassroots representation, where the MPP plays a key role in resolving local issues such as infrastructure development and community welfare. No official comments from PKR or the Prime Minister’s Department have been received as of this report.
