CYBERJAYA, Malaysia, Sept 6, 2025– The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a strategic partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), dismantled a syndicate using illegal Fake Base Transceiver Station (Fake BTS) equipment to send fraudulent SMS messages. The operation, named Op Pancing, was launched following public complaints and intelligence.

An individual was arrested while operating a Fake BTS from a vehicle near a major shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur. Frequency tests confirmed the device sent fake SMS messages, phishing links, and gambling content to the public.
Subsequent raids, with PDRM’s assistance, targeted a two-storey terrace house in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, uncovering an MPV and additional Fake BTS equipment. The syndicate had modified the devices for mobile use.
Authorities seized 45 items valued at RM100,000. The case is being investigated under Section 239(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), carrying a maximum penalty of RM1 million fine, 10 years imprisonment, or both, and Regulation 34(5)(c) of the Communications and Multimedia (Spectrum) Regulations 2000, with a maximum fine of RM300,000, three years jail, or both.
