WASHINGTON D.C July 19, 2026 — The United States military launched another wave of airstrikes against Iranian targets on Sunday night into early Monday, continuing a sustained bombing campaign now in its ninth straight night, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
The strikes were ordered to further degrade Iran’s military capabilities, particularly those threatening commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and to retaliate for recent Iranian attacks that killed American service members.
CENTCOM stated that U.S. forces targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks.
Explosions were reported across parts of Iran early Monday local time, including areas in southern provinces near the Strait of Hormuz such as near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island.
President Donald Trump said the U.S. “hit them very hard again tonight” in honor of the fallen American troops.
The renewed U.S. operations follow Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on a base in Jordan on Friday (July 17/18 local time). Two U.S. service members were killed in that attack, four others were wounded and medically evacuated, and one remains missing. An additional U.S. service member was killed in Iraq on Saturday while handling the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone.
Since the broader conflict began on February 28, 2026, 17 U.S. service members have been killed.
The latest exchanges come after repeated cycles of strikes and counter-strikes that have unraveled interim ceasefire efforts. The conflict has centered heavily on the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes. Iran has previously targeted commercial vessels in the area and launched retaliatory strikes on U.S. and allied facilities in countries including Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
U.S. officials have framed the strikes as necessary to protect freedom of navigation and punish attacks on American forces. Iranian officials have described their actions as defensive responses to U.S. and Israeli aggression.
The renewed fighting has raised concerns about further escalation and risks to regional stability. Oil prices have seen upward pressure amid the uncertainty.
CENTCOM has indicated that operations will continue as needed to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten shipping and U.S. interests in the region.
