KUALA LUMPUR May 5, 2026 — UMNO president Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today that the party has no intention of becoming an opposition in Negeri Sembilan and will continue to be part of the state unity government.
“All 14 assemblymen from UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) in Negeri Sembilan have agreed to continue supporting the state Unity Government to ensure political stability,” Zahid said.
The decision was reached following a discussion with the Negeri Sembilan UMNO assemblymen on April 30.
Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, explained that the assemblymen’s earlier move was driven by good intentions to ensure respect for the royal institution and customs in the state.
“However, all of them have ultimately agreed to continue supporting the Unity Government in Negeri Sembilan to avoid any disruption, in the interest of the people,” he added.
He stressed the importance of unity amid global economic challenges and called for full support for Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s efforts to maintain political stability.
This latest development puts an end to speculation about a potential shift by UMNO in the state following reports of withdrawn support for the current Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.
Zahid made the remarks while speaking to reporters after an event, as captured in Bernama TV’s report.
The assurance is expected to strengthen the stability of the unity government administration in Negeri Sembilan.
