WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 6, 2026 – President Donald J. Trump said Wednesday that Iran is urgently seeking a deal to end hostilities following heavy U.S. military action that left the Islamic Republic’s navy, air force, and missile capabilities in ruins.
In remarks from the Oval Office captured in a White House video and shared by the official Rapid Response 47 account, Trump emphasized America’s firm red line while expressing optimism about ongoing negotiations.
“We’ll see if we get there. They can’t have nuclear weapons. It’s very simple,” Trump stated. “We have to get what we have to get. If we don’t do that, we’ll have to go a big step further — but with that being said, they want to make a deal. We’ve had very good talks over the last 44 hours, and it’s very possible that we’ll make a deal.”
Trump detailed the extent of damage inflicted on Iranian forces during recent U.S. operations, which he described as decisive.
“They had a navy with 159 ships and now every ship is blown to pieces and lying at the bottom of the water,” he said. “They had an air force, lots of planes — there aren’t any planes. There are no anti-aircraft [systems]. There aren’t radars left. Their missiles [are] mostly decimated… The leaders [are] all dead, I think.”
The President added that rebuilding Iran’s capabilities would take decades if left in its current state, framing the situation as one where the U.S. holds a commanding position.
“We are in good shape… Now we’re doing well,” Trump said. “We’ve won. Now it’s only a question of… if we don’t get what we have to get, we’ll have to go [a] big step further.”
The comments come amid heightened tensions following U.S. strikes aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and military infrastructure. Analysts note the developments mark a potential turning point, with Tehran reportedly open to talks after suffering significant setbacks.
The White House has not released further details on the substance of the recent talks, but Trump’s remarks signal a clear path: a diplomatic resolution is possible — provided Iran permanently abandons its nuclear ambitions.
