MICHIGAN April 125, 2026 – U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) declared today that the inability of Americans to “work hard, play by the rules and get ahead” represents a serious national security issue, particularly in a diverse country like the United States.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) shared on Tax Day, the former CIA analyst and Pentagon official attached a video clip from her appearance the previous day at the NOTUS “Made in America” summit on the U.S. economy. In the roughly 99-second clip, Slotkin tells the audience:
“I see this as a national security issue. In a diverse nation like ours, if people can’t work hard, play by the rules and get ahead and have their kids do better, we got a real problem.”
Slotkin has repeatedly argued that the shrinking middle class and stalled upward mobility pose the greatest existential threat to America — greater than foreign adversaries. In earlier speeches and policy remarks, she has linked economic frustration in a multiracial democracy to rising political division, loss of trust in institutions, and vulnerability to authoritarian appeals.
The Michigan Democrat, who often draws on her national-security background, has called for an “Economic War Plan” focused on housing affordability, strengthening domestic manufacturing, and restoring the promise that hard work leads to a better life for the next generation. Her latest comments come amid ongoing national debates over tariffs, cost-of-living pressures, and economic populism.
The NOTUS summit, held April 14 in Washington, featured discussions on U.S. economic policy and American manufacturing under the current administration. Slotkin was among the featured speakers.
Slotkin’s office did not immediately respond to a request for further comment on the post. The senator’s X message has drawn both supportive and sharply critical replies, reflecting the polarized reaction her economic-national-security framing often provokes.
