KUALA LUMPUR, November 5, 2026 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Seberang Jaya Hospital in Penang after it began offering coronary angiogram and angioplasty services, making it the first district hospital in Peninsular Malaysia to carry out both procedures.
In a post shared on X on Wednesday night, November 4, Anwar congratulated the hospital’s staff and its team of heart specialists on successfully starting the services that day. “This achievement makes history for Seberang Jaya Hospital as the first district hospital in Peninsular Malaysia to carry out both procedures,” he wrote in Malay.
Anwar recalled that he visited the hospital in January to officiate its new building. “Today’s development is certainly pleasing, as the upgraded facilities have been followed by the expansion of specialised treatment much needed by residents of Seberang Perai and the surrounding areas,” he said.
He said the expanded service was expected to shorten waiting times and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment at Penang Hospital. He thanked the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, hospital management and the Health Ministry, saying their expertise and service gave hope to patients and strengthened public confidence in the country’s public healthcare services.
“God willing, the MADANI Government will continue to strengthen the capabilities of public hospitals so that more people receive quality treatment more quickly, to safeguard lives and the wellbeing of the people,” he added. Photographs with the post show hospital staff in the invasive cardiology laboratory.
According to Bernama, as reported by the New Straits Times, the procedures were led by Datuk Dr Mohamed Jahangir Abdul Wahab, head of Penang State Cardiology Services and head of Penang Hospital’s Cardiology Department. Suara Merdeka reported that eight heart patients were treated on the first day, four of whom underwent angioplasty to restore blood flow in narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.
Dr Mohamed Jahangir told Bernama that the goal was to ensure patients receive quality cardiac care promptly and closer to home. He said long-term plans include developing the hospital into a more comprehensive heart treatment centre, with cardiothoracic surgical services targeted by mid-2027.
Adult cardiology services at the hospital have been built up in phases since 2023, starting with a resident cardiologist. The Cardiology Unit now has four Coronary Care Unit beds and 15 coronary ward beds, along with an Invasive Cardiology Laboratory fitted with an angiography system and modern electrophysiology equipment. Pacemaker and electrophysiology treatments for patients with heart rhythm disorders are expected to follow. The hospital’s cardiology clinic also provides outpatient care and diagnostic tests, including echocardiography, cardiac stress tests and Holter heart-rhythm monitoring, according to Suara.TV.
“With the rising burden of cardiovascular disease and the demand for increasingly complex cardiac care, expanding adult cardiology services at HSJ is a significant strategic step,” Dr Mohamed Jahangir said, adding that the initiative would position the hospital as another major cardiovascular referral centre for the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.
