Bestari Jaya, Selangor – 26 April 2026 – The District Action Group on Environmental Sustainability (DAGES) under Rotary District 3300 successfully hosted the “World Earth Day Project” on Sunday, 26 April 2026 at the Rotary Peace Park, Bestari Jaya, in collaboration with Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) and with the support of Tourism Selangor.
The event brought together government leaders, Rotarians, NGOs, community members, and tourism stakeholders for a meaningful morning of environmental action, including a symbolic bamboo and tree planting programme. This flagship initiative underscores Rotary’s commitment to sustainability, community service, and transforming degraded former mining land into vibrant green spaces.
The Off River Storage (ORS) area at Bestari Jaya, which was once a challenging, chemically affected ex-mining site, has shown remarkable recovery through reforestation efforts jointly undertaken by LUAS and Rotary Malaysia since 2018. Today, the Rotary Peace Park and the developing DAGES Oxygen Park stand as living testaments to successful environmental restoration.
Ms Chua Yee Ling, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Selangor, expressed strong support for the project, stating that the area holds strong potential to become a new nature-based tourism destination in Selangor.
“We are impressed by the transformation of this site. The collaboration between Rotary Malaysia and LUAS not only benefits the environment but also contributes to the development of sustainable tourism in Selangor,” she said. She added that such initiatives align with and support the Visit Malaysia 2026 and Visit Selangor 2026 campaigns by promoting eco-friendly attractions and responsible tourism.
Yang Berhormat Tuan Jefri Bin Mejan, ADUN Ijok, who attended the event, voiced full support and highlighted the project’s alignment with the three pillars of sustainability — environmental, social, and economic.
“Seeing more than 120 trees in the Rotary Peace Park and over 300 bamboo species in the Oxygen Park today is proof of what can be achieved when humanity works with nature,” said YB Jefri.
He emphasised that the planted trees serve as natural protection for water sources, while the project fosters community unity and creates economic opportunities for locals.
The programme saw active participation from 32 Rotary clubs and numerous individuals, reflecting strong community spirit and collective commitment towards environmental conservation.
“Rotary has always placed environmental sustainability at the heart of our service work,” said Co-Chair Past Assistant Governor Bharat J Gorasia.
“Through this World Earth Day Project at our own Rotary Peace Park, we are not only planting trees but also planting hope for future generations. Every Rotarian, Rotary Club, and Partner who joins us today is helping to build a cleaner, greener Selangor,” said S. Subramaniam who is the Co-Chair of DAGES and the Organising Chair of that event.
The event reinforces Rotary’s role as a catalyst for positive change by forging strategic partnerships with state agencies such as LUAS and Tourism Selangor, while turning community spaces into symbols of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
