MELAKA, October 31, 2026 – Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu says he is confident that voters in the Bukit Katil state constituency will re-elect incumbent Adly Zahari in the 16th Melaka state election, Bernama reported.
Mohamad, who is also Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, said his confidence was based on the reception the public had given Adly, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the seat and Melaka PH chairman, according to Bernama.
“As of 9.32 am today, everything is proceeding smoothly. There is a large turnout of Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters, and since PAS is also contesting two seats in Melaka, many of their supporters are present here as well,” he told reporters at the Bukit Katil nomination centre at Dewan Tun Ali.
“However, in terms of public reception, we are confident that Adly will be re-elected by the constituents. That is our hope,” he said.
Mohamad had earlier accompanied Adly to the nomination centre, arriving at about 8.40 am. Amanah women’s chief Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu, who is also Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, was also present.
Voters ‘somewhat confused’
Commenting on PH’s campaign strategy, Mohamad said the coalition would focus on the constituencies it is contesting.
He also acknowledged that because both BN and PH are part of the federal government, voters could find it confusing when weighing up the government’s achievements.
“The public is somewhat confused because both BN and PH are in the government. So, when BN highlights an achievement, it is an achievement of the government. Likewise, when we highlight an achievement, it is also an achievement of the government,” he said.
“It is up to the voters to weigh this for themselves. We will strive to provide clarification. But as I mentioned earlier, a certain level of confusion among the public will likely persist,” he added.
A four-cornered fight
Adly, who is Deputy Defence Minister and a former Melaka Chief Minister, is seeking a third consecutive term in Bukit Katil. He faces PAS candidate Muhammad Ridzuan Mohd Sarif, who is representing Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) candidate Dr Aliza Che Amran and independent candidate Abu Bakar Sabudin, The Star reported. Muhammad Ridzuan was accompanied to the nomination centre by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the paper said.
In the 15th Melaka state election, Adly won Bukit Katil with a majority of 1,057 votes, defeating BN’s Datuk Hasnoor Sdg Husin, PN’s Muhammad Al Afiz Yahya and independent candidate Abdul Hamid.
The Election Commission (SPR) has fixed November 14 as polling day for the 16th Melaka state election, with early voting on November 10.
