Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his condolences on the death of Mata Ayer assemblywoman Wan Badariah Wan Saad, who passed away at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar, Perlis, on Saturday afternoon. She was 50.
In a post shared on X on the evening of Saturday, October 31, 2026, Fahmi opened with the Islamic expression of grief, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un”, and wrote in Malay: “Saya menerima perkhabaran duka pemergian YB Puan Wan Badariah Wan Saad, ADUN Mata Ayer.” This translates as “I have received the sad news of the passing of YB Puan Wan Badariah Wan Saad, the Mata Ayer assemblywoman.”
“My condolences to all the members of the late assemblywoman’s family, as well as her friends and comrades in the struggle,” he wrote, before offering a prayer that God would forgive her sins. The post was accompanied by a black-and-white portrait of Wan Badariah.
Death confirmed by PAS Perlis
Wan Badariah, a PAS assemblywoman, died at 4.26pm at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, according to Perlis PAS information chief Mohamad Zahid Ibrahim, who announced her death on the state party’s Facebook page, The Star and Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Let us all pray that the soul of the late departed may be blessed with divine mercy, that all her sins be forgiven, and that she be placed among the faithful and the righteous,” Mohamad Zahid said, as quoted by The Star. He also extended his condolences to her family.
Kosmo! Online reported that the cause of death and the funeral arrangements had not yet been announced at the time of reporting.
A first for PAS Perlis
Wan Badariah, who came from Padang Siding in Arau and was a lawyer by profession, made history as the first woman candidate fielded by PAS Perlis when she contested the 15th General Election in November 2022, Kosmo! Online reported.
Standing on the Perikatan Nasional ticket, she won the Mata Ayer state seat with 4,419 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional’s Siti Berenee Yahya, who polled 2,398 votes, and Pakatan Harapan’s Amran Kamaruddin, who received 794 votes, for a majority of 2,021 votes, according to Bernama.
She went on to serve as a state executive councillor under former Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli from November 2022 until December last year, The Star reported. Utusan Malaysia noted that she had held the post of chairman of the state Tourism Committee during that administration.
In May 2024, Utusan Malaysia reported that she had been placed in an induced coma to allow her to rest after suffering complications from a thyroid condition. She was later reported to be recovering and returned to her duties as an assemblywoman.
Perlis assembly now has four vacant seats
According to The Star, her death leaves PAS with five assemblymen in the 15-seat Perlis State Legislative Assembly, equal to the number held by Bersatu. PKR’s Gan Ay Ling, the state Opposition leader, holds one seat, while four seats are now vacant.
The other three vacant seats are Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji, following the expulsion of their PAS assemblymen in December last year after they were among eight Perikatan Nasional assemblymen who withdrew their support for Mohd Shukri. He resigned on December 25, citing health reasons, and Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah was sworn in as his successor on December 28, the paper reported.
