KUALA LUMPUR, April 28, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has thrown his full support behind Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Utama Aminuddin Harun, urging him to continue carrying out his responsibilities as usual following a directive from the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir.
In an official media statement released today, Anwar revealed that he had an audience with Tuanku Muhriz last night to discuss recent developments involving the state’s royal institution and government administration. He praised the ruler’s wisdom in handling the matter and backed the decree for Aminuddin to remain in office.
“I support the decree of His Highness for YAB Datuk Seri Utama Aminuddin Harun to continue performing his duties and responsibilities as Menteri Besar to ensure administrative stability in the state, protect the people’s interests, and uphold the rule of law currently in force,” Anwar said in the statement.
He expressed confidence in Aminuddin’s experience and excellent service, stating that the Menteri Besar would continue to discharge his duties perfectly.
The development comes amid an ongoing political and constitutional crisis in Negeri Sembilan. On April 19, four Undang (territorial chieftains) declared the deposition of Tuanku Muhriz under the state’s Adat Perpatih customs, naming an alternative successor. Aminuddin dismissed the move as unconstitutional, triggering backlash from Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly UMNO. All 14 UMNO state assemblymen subsequently withdrew support from the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led government, leaving Aminuddin — a PKR vice-president — in a minority position in the 36-seat State Legislative Assembly (he retains support from 17 PH lawmakers).
Despite losing his majority, Aminuddin has insisted on staying in power as a minority government, citing the ruler’s advice and the state constitution.
Anwar emphasised that issues concerning the Undang institution are being addressed through proper legal channels and the wisdom of the Undang themselves. He assured that the Federal Government will provide full cooperation to ensure continued economic progress and the well-being of the people.
“In any situation, the sovereignty of the royal institution and state laws must continue to be preserved and defended,” he added.
The Prime Minister also called on the people of Negeri Sembilan — and Malaysians in general — to remain calm, courteous, and orderly, especially when discussing matters involving the royal institution and state laws.
He concluded the statement with a traditional proverb:
“Kemenakan beraja ke mamak, mamak beraja ke muafakat, muafakat beraja kepada kebenaran, dan kebenaran itu berdiri sendiri.”
As of now, no immediate state election or dissolution of the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly has been confirmed. Anwar previously indicated that any such move is “not an issue yet” and will depend on further processes under the state constitution.
The situation continues to unfold, with calls from various parties for a resolution that respects both customary law and constitutional principles while prioritising public interest and stability.
