WASHINGTON, D.C. May 30, 2026 — In a wide-ranging interview on Fox News’ My View with Lara Trump, President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Iran while emphasizing a firm stance on securing strong terms for the United States.
“We’re close to a very good deal,” Trump stated. “If you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal, and slowly but surely, we’re getting, I think, what we want — and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it a different way.”
The comments come amid a fragile ceasefire in place since early April 2026, following U.S. military actions against Iranian targets earlier in the year. Negotiators have reportedly reached a tentative 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire and launch talks on Iran’s nuclear program, though the agreement requires final approval from Trump and Iranian leadership.
Key issues in the talks include reopening the Strait of Hormuz for unrestricted international shipping, addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions (including enriched uranium stockpiles), and easing economic pressures from the conflict, which has disrupted global oil flows and driven up energy prices.
Trump highlighted the value of patience in negotiations, noting that Iran is a “very tough” counterpart. He referenced the potential humanitarian benefits of a deal but made clear that military options remain on the table if terms are not met. “This would go faster… It’s probably better on a humane standpoint. There’s something nice about it also [to] save a lot of lives,” he added.
The administration has maintained maximum pressure through sanctions and a naval blockade on Iranian ports, imposed after earlier strikes. Recent reports indicate U.S. forces remain ready to resume operations if needed.
The 2026 U.S.-Iran tensions escalated earlier this year with strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, Iranian responses including missile attacks on U.S. positions (such as in Kuwait), and Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for about one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments.
Markets have reacted sensitively to developments, with oil prices fluctuating amid uncertainty. A successful deal could stabilize energy costs, while failure risks further escalation.
Trump’s interview underscores his “America First” approach: prioritizing strong outcomes over rushed agreements, while keeping military readiness as leverage.
The full interview is scheduled to air on Fox News. As negotiations continue, all eyes remain on whether a comprehensive agreement can be reached or if the conflict reignites.
