PUTRAJAYA April 14, 2026 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the opening of the Kompleks Akademi Sepak Takraw Malaysia, hailing the facility as a powerful symbol of the nation’s renewed commitment to reviving sepak takraw – Malaysia’s iconic heritage sport.
In a heartfelt address at the ceremony, the Prime Minister described sepak takraw as far more than a game. “It is the identity of our nation, a symbol of discipline, resilience, and the artistic beauty of a sport that has long brought glory to Malaysia on the world stage,” he said.
Acknowledging past challenges faced by the sport and its athletes, Anwar stressed that today marks a strong comeback. “There have been falls and rises, but today we rise with stronger determination and brighter spirit,” he declared.
The Prime Minister urged young talents to fully utilise the new academy. “Hone your skills, build your character, and nurture high patriotic spirit. We want to produce a generation of athletes who excel not only in the arena but also carry the nation’s pride with great heart,” he added.
He vowed that the government will transform the complex into the launching pad for a new golden era, positioning Malaysia once again as a force to be reckoned with in international sepak takraw.
As a concrete show of support, Anwar announced an immediate allocation of RM2 million to enhance training facilities, improve the academy’s comfort, and strengthen the role of the Persatuan Sepak Takraw Malaysia.
The event was attended by youth athletes, coaches, sports officials, and ministry representatives. Photos from the ceremony captured Anwar engaging warmly with young players in national team jerseys, posing for group shots, and playfully demonstrating a kick with the traditional sepak takraw ball on stage.
The inauguration aligns with the MADANI government’s vision of empowering youth through sports and preserving Malaysia’s cultural sporting heritage.
