KUALA LUMPUR, April 25, 2026 – Malaysia’s digital economy received a major boost yesterday as Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced the official launch of PlayStation Studios Malaysia Phase 2, five years after Sony Interactive Entertainment established its first Southeast Asian studio in the country.
In a statement posted on X, the minister highlighted the expansion as clear proof of Malaysia’s growing stature in the global games industry and the world-class capability of local talent.
“Five years ago, we welcomed PlayStation Studios to our shores. The launch of PlayStation Studios Malaysia Phase 2 is not just a testament to Malaysia’s position as a serious and competitive player in the global games industry, but also the capability of our world-class local talents in shaping the gaming industry on a global scale,” Gobind wrote.
He added that Sony’s continued confidence in Malaysia reflects the strength of the nation’s digital ecosystem — supported by skilled talent, clear government policies, robust infrastructure, and a rapidly expanding creative industry.
“The Ministry of Digital and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) remain committed to strengthening these foundations by providing the infrastructure, policy clarity, and talent support needed to elevate the nation’s gaming industry to greater heights,” the minister said.
The announcement was accompanied by several group photographs showing Minister Gobind with senior Sony executives at the launch event.

Sony Interactive Entertainment first announced the establishment of its Malaysia studio in November 2019, with operations beginning in 2020. The studio initially focused on art and animation support for PlayStation titles. Phase 2 marks a significant expansion, positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for AAA game development and further strengthening ties between the government and one of the world’s leading interactive entertainment companies.
The development aligns with Malaysia’s broader ambition to become a leading digital and creative economy in Southeast Asia under the Malaysia MADANI framework and the national AI Nation initiative.
