MELAKA, 25 April 2026 – The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) today officially handed over the Phase 2 (Package 2A) Drainage System Upgrade Project to the Melaka State Government. The RM10.351 million initiative aims to resolve recurring flash flood issues in the historic Bandaraya Melaka area.
The project, which was completed on 19 March 2026, was formally transferred during the national-level World Water Day (Hari Air Sedunia – HAS) 2026 celebration held at Pantai Tanjung Bidara, Masjid Tanah.
According to the media statement, the upgrade targets three key locations within the Melaka Historic City Council area:
- Kampung Enam and Kampung Tujuh;
- Jalan Tamby Abdullah to Jalan Parameswara; and
- Taman Merak Mas to Kampung Tebing Tinggi, Bukit Katil.
The scope of work includes the construction of a pump house along with associated civil, building, structural, mechanical, electrical, and automation works.
This handover forms part of PETRA’s broader commitment to water infrastructure in Melaka. The federal government has rolled out 21 water-related projects worth RM3.1 billion under the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans. The first Rolling Plan (RP1) 2026 allocation for the state stands at RM274 million.
The HAS 2026 national event, organised in collaboration with the Melaka State Government, was officiated by YDato’ Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and PETRA Minister, with the attendance of Dato’ Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka.
The programme, which drew over 5,000 visitors, also featured the launch of the “Dasar Air Negara” (National Water Policy) and the presentation of various water sector awards. It aligns with Malaysia MADANI’s aspirations for sustainable and integrated water resource management under the National Water Transformation Plan 2040 (AIR 2040).
PETRA emphasised that the project is a concrete step towards protecting Melaka’s heritage zone from flash floods while ensuring long-term water security for current and future generations.
