AUSTIN — McLaren team-mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have taken their rivalry from the race track to a giant card table, with Formula 1 releasing a new clip of the pair locked in a head-to-head battle in a super-sized game of UNO.
The sport’s official X account posted the video on Tuesday (Oct 20) with the caption: “Giant UNO isn’t just a game… especially for Lando and Oscar”, adding: “Watch the full video now on our YouTube channel!” alongside the hashtag #F1 and a tag for McLaren. An overhead shot from the clip shows oversized cards laid out around a large UNO logo painted on the paddock tarmac, with the drivers standing over them in McLaren papaya and Alpine blue.
The full video sees the McLaren duo joined by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly. According to Motorsport.com, the cards were roughly the size of a sign board, and the game began with the drivers being asked to shuffle the deck. “Oh my god, they’re actually heavy as well,” Piastri said, while Norris joked: “I don’t want to injure myself.”
Gasly was first to clear his hand after hitting Norris with a +4 card, leaving the McLaren drivers to fight it out for the remaining places. “OK, so it’s me against Oscar now,” said Norris, the reigning world champion. “We’ve both lost, so I don’t really care,” Piastri replied.
The battle swung back and forth. Piastri was at one stage forced to pick up several cards, and at one point Norris, holding a huge pile, even managed to hit himself in the face with one. But Piastri whittled his hand down and Norris was left holding cards when the game ended. “That’s the first ever UNO game I’ve lost in my life,” he said. Piastri’s verdict on the format was more practical: “I think it’s a two-person job at some points with so many cards. You need to Frisbee a few…”
The video is part of a commercial tie-up with Mattel, which began with its Hot Wheels brand before expanding to UNO at the end of the 2025 season, with a special Formula 1 edition featuring drivers, cars, helmets, team principals and reserve drivers from every team.
It offers a lighter look at a pairing that has been under the microscope since their 2025 title fight, which Norris won at the Abu Dhabi finale on 423 points, two clear of Max Verstappen, with Piastri third on 410. This season has been tougher. Norris is sixth in the drivers’ standings on 201 points and Piastri seventh on 138, after the pair finished fourth and fifth at the Singapore Grand Prix on Oct 11.
McLaren are third in the constructors’ championship on 339 points, just seven ahead of Red Bull, while Mercedes lead on 578. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli heads the drivers’ table on 340 points, 102 clear of team-mate George Russell.
The United States Grand Prix weekend runs from Oct 23 to 25, with qualifying at 4pm local time on Saturday and the 56-lap race starting at 3pm on Sunday, which is 4am on Monday (Oct 26) in Malaysia. The original Formula 1 post can be viewed on X: https://x.com/F1/status/2112559465082085614.
