PUTRAJAYA, July 14, 2026 — The Ministry of Digital Malaysia has hosted senior executives from OpenAI to discuss potential strategic cooperation aimed at advancing the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities in support of its national digital transformation goals.
Datuk Fabian Bigar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Digital, received a courtesy visit from OpenAI’s top leadership, led by Adam Cohen, Head of Economic Policy, and Sandy Kunvanatagarn, Head of Global Affairs (Asia Pacific). The closed-door strategic meeting focused on aligning AI technology development with Malaysia’s Malaysia Digital 2030 (MD2030) agenda and the broader vision of becoming an AI Nation by 2030.
Discussions covered:
- Preliminary findings from the national AI Capability Gap Study
- Strategies for developing local AI talent
- Strengthening digital leadership through the Executive Digital Leadership (EDL) Program, implemented in partnership with the Asia School of Business (ASB) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
OpenAI welcomed Malaysia’s proactive efforts to build a robust AI ecosystem. The company expressed readiness to explore deeper strategic collaboration, including sharing training modules via the OpenAI Academy to enhance capacity building for civil servants.
OpenAI also suggested that Malaysia consider participating in its OpenAI Edu for Countries initiative. This program focuses on integrating the safe and responsible use of AI tools into early-stage education systems.
The ministry highlighted that the engagement reflects its ongoing commitment to talent development, strengthening digital leadership, and promoting the responsible adoption of AI technologies. These efforts are intended to accelerate Malaysia’s digital transformation and support the realization of the AI Nation 2030 aspiration.
This meeting builds on recent national initiatives, including the launch of the Malaysia Digital 2030 (MD2030) action plan by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in late June 2026, which positions AI as a central driver of economic growth, public service improvement, and innovation.
The Ministry of Digital shared photos from the meeting on its official X account, showing formal discussions and a group photo of ministry officials alongside the OpenAI delegation.
Malaysia continues to position itself as a regional player in responsible AI development through partnerships with global technology leaders.
