CEBU, PHILIPINNES May 7, 2026 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by his wife Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, has arrived in Cebu City this afternoon to lead Malaysia’s delegation at the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Prime Minister Anwar expressed warm greetings to the host nation, saying: “Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” (Long live the Philippines!). He added, “Alhamdulillah, my wife Azizah and I have just landed in Cebu City, Republic of the Philippines this afternoon. I am here to represent the country for the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings, which this year is chaired by the Philippines.”
The summit, hosted by the Philippines under the theme of regional cooperation and sustainability, is scheduled for May 7–8, 2026, in Cebu. Upon arrival, Anwar is expected to participate in the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit today. Tomorrow, he will attend the main 48th ASEAN Summit and hold sideline bilateral meetings with other ASEAN leaders.
According to the Prime Minister, the discussions will focus on pressing regional and global issues, including the current global energy supply challenges. Leaders will also work to strengthen ASEAN’s vision as “a close-knit, strong, and responsible family and community.”
Prime Minister Anwar is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Hasan, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
The 48th ASEAN Summit marks a key moment for the 10-member bloc as it navigates economic resilience, energy security, and deeper integration amid global uncertainties. The Philippines assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, succeeding Malaysia.
