MELAKA, Oct 23 (Bernama)– The Melaka Port Authority (LPM) has allocated RM300,000 under the 2026 MADANI Adopted Village (KAM) Programme to upgrade facilities and support fishermen in Pernu and Telok Mas.
LPM chairman and Kota Melaka Member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong said the allocation covered upgrading the slipway at Pernu Fishermen’s Jetty, providing boats and financial assistance, and supplying outboard engines to registered fishermen.
The initiative included 15 outboard engines, each with a 30-horsepower capacity and valued at about RM10,000, for fishermen at the Tanjong Nibong Fishermen’s Base in Telok Mas.
A 21-foot fibreglass boat was also donated to a fisherman at Pernu Fishermen’s Jetty, while another received financial assistance to purchase a fibreglass boat.
Khoo said the slipway upgrade included installing a winch to help fishermen haul their boats ashore for repairs and maintenance.
He said LPM funded the improvement works at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM)-owned facility with the agency’s approval and support. Both agencies would monitor the project to ensure it benefited the fishing community.
The assistance was planned following discussions with fishermen’s representatives through their associations to identify the community’s needs, he said.
Khoo added that the initiative would help reduce the financial burden of purchasing or replacing boat engines, enabling fishermen to sustain their livelihoods and support their families.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 2026 KAM Programme at the Pernu Fishermen’s Base today.
Also present were LPM general manager Datuk Captain K. Subramaniam and LKIM Melaka deputy director Nor Izati Abd Karim.
