KARAK, Oct 23 (Bernama)– The Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) record about 3,000 toll evasion cases annually, resulting in losses exceeding RM20,000.
AFA Systems and Services Sdn Bhd general manager Ismaliza Ibrahim said the company, which operates and manages the highways, recorded an average of eight toll evasion cases daily.
She said 95 per cent of the incidents involved Class 1 vehicles, followed by Class 2 vehicles at 1.9 per cent and Class 3 vehicles at 1.3 per cent.
The most common method was tailgating, where drivers follow closely behind another vehicle to pass through the toll barrier without paying. The practice accounted for 63 per cent of reported cases.
To address the problem, the company has joined forces with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to conduct integrated enforcement operations at the Karak Toll Plaza.
The operation, conducted between 3 am and 5 am, aims to detect and curb tailgating and the unauthorised use of toll lanes.
Ismaliza said the latest operation targeted 37 repeat offenders across various vehicle classes, with the violations resulting in cumulative losses of RM10,600.
One vehicle was found to have committed 27 violations, causing losses of RM771.50, while another recorded the highest number of offences at 44, amounting to RM350.10 in unpaid tolls.
She said the enforcement effort was intended to recover outstanding toll revenue and educate motorists on the importance of paying tolls and the legal consequences of evasion.
Under Section 8 of the Federal Roads (Private Management) Act 1984, those convicted of toll evasion face a fine of between RM2,000 and RM5,000, or imprisonment for up to one year.
