JOHOR BAHRU April 17, 2026 – Johor Bahru has taken a major step forward in Malaysia’s digital transformation, officially launching several real-world 5G-powered AI city use cases under the Ministry of Digital’s 5G AI Cities Grant.
Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, Deputy Minister of Digital, officiated the AI Cities Launching Ceremony today at Menara MBJB. The event was organised by the Ministry of Digital and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) in collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB).
The showcased initiatives demonstrate how 5G and artificial intelligence can deliver tangible benefits to residents, turning national AI policies into practical solutions on the ground.
“Johor Bahru is not merely planning — it is implementing. These are not just concepts, but real-world use cases that have a direct impact on the citizens,” said Datuk Wilson Ugak.
He emphasised that AI, 5G, and digital technology are key drivers in building cities that are safer, more efficient, and more inclusive.
Among the highlighted use cases are:
- 5G-enabled AI aerial drones for medical delivery and urban planning
- Solar-powered AI CCTV systems for real-time monitoring and enforcement
These smart mobility solutions will support Visit Johor 2026 and strengthen overall public safety and city management.
The launch forms part of the Ministry of Digital’s broader national AI agenda to position Malaysian cities as living laboratories for practical AI deployment, backed by robust 5G infrastructure and close partnerships between government, local authorities, and industry players.
The 5G AI Cities Grant, awarded to selected city councils and solutions providers in 2025, continues to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies across Malaysia.
