CANNES, FRANCE May 15, 2026 — In an emotional highlight of the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 15, 2026, screen legend John Travolta was overcome with tears as he accepted a surprise honorary Palme d’Or just before the world premiere of his feature directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach.
Festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux presented the lifetime achievement honor to the 72-year-old actor at the Debussy Theater, prompting a standing ovation from the audience. Visibly moved and clutching his chest, Travolta — sporting a cream-colored beret, glasses, and a sharp suit — struggled to contain his emotions.
“This is beyond the Oscar!” an emotional Travolta declared. “Surprise complétement!” he exclaimed in French, adding, “I can’t believe this. This is the last thing I expected.” He thanked Frémaux profusely, calling the moment “humbling” and crediting the Cannes team for believing in his project early on.
Travolta recalled his initial meeting with Frémaux in November, when he learned his film had not only been accepted but would make history as one of the earliest selections. “I cried like a baby because I just couldn’t believe it,” he said, as a tribute reel of his career played, evoking memories from his decades in film.
The honorary Palme d’Or recognizes Travolta’s iconic contributions to cinema, from his breakthrough in Saturday Night Fever and Grease to his Oscar-nominated performances in Pulp Fiction (which won the Palme d’Or in 1994) and beyond. Frémaux praised him as “one of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.”
Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which Travolta wrote, directed, and co-produced, is an adaptation of his own 1997 children’s book. The Apple-backed film stars his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta (who also walked the red carpet with him) and draws from his lifelong passion for aviation. It tells the story of a young airplane enthusiast and his mother on a magical cross-country flight. The film is set to stream globally on Apple TV+ on May 29.
Fans and colleagues flooded social media with praise, calling the moment “pure cinema magic” and a well-deserved full-circle celebration for the star who helped put Cannes on the map with Pulp Fiction. Travolta’s rare father-daughter appearance with Ella added an extra layer of warmth to the evening.
The surprise honor follows a similar gesture to Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, underscoring Cannes’ tradition of celebrating Hollywood icons. Travolta’s tearful reaction has already gone viral, cementing another unforgettable night on the Croisette.
