LOS ANGELES January 4, 2026 — DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn has broken his silence on the uncertainty surrounding the DC Universe following Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros.
In a recent interview with Variety, Gunn addressed the major corporate shift, expressing a balanced view of caution and optimism. “Do I have hopes? No, I really don’t because everything’s unknown,” Gunn stated. “I’ve been through these sort of changes so many times… I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. Every direction has really exciting things for DC, so I hope it goes well.”
Gunn, who helmed the 2025 blockbuster Superman that kicked off the rebooted DCU, emphasized his experience with studio transitions and advised patience. “I’m always careful what you wish for because you don’t really know until you know,” he added.
The comments come as Netflix moves forward with its $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. following its separation from Discovery Global, announced in December 2025. The transaction, which values the studio at a significant premium, has sparked widespread discussion about the future of theatrical releases, streaming strategies, and franchise management for iconic properties like DC Comics.
While the deal awaits final shareholder approval and regulatory review, Gunn’s remarks signal continuity for ongoing DC projects. Fans have speculated on potential changes to release models, with Netflix historically favoring streaming premieres, though the company has pledged to maintain theatrical windows for major films.
DC enthusiasts remain watchful as the new era approaches, with upcoming titles like Supergirl still in development under Gunn’s oversight.
