TEHRAN July 16, 2026 — Iranian state media reported early Thursday that the country’s armed forces carried out new attacks targeting U.S. military assets in Kuwait and Bahrain as part of ongoing retaliatory operations.
According to statements carried by Iranian state broadcaster IRIB and other official channels, the Iranian Army said it struck radar systems, Patriot air defense installations, and fuel storage facilities at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Separate waves of drone attacks were reported to have targeted communication and radar systems, including Super Hawk radars and Patriot sites, at the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain.
The Iranian military described the actions as the “tenth phase” of its retaliatory campaign, referred to internally as “Operation Lightning.” These claims follow a series of U.S. strikes on Iranian military targets in recent days, including coastal defense systems and sites linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest developments are part of the wider 2026 Iran conflict, which has intensified around shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has conducted multiple rounds of airstrikes on Iranian military infrastructure in response to attacks on commercial vessels and to maintain open navigation through the vital oil transit route. Iran has responded by expanding strikes to U.S. and allied facilities across the Gulf region, including previous reported actions in Jordan and other locations.
Kuwait and Bahrain, both hosts to significant U.S. military presence, activated air defense systems and issued public alerts during previous waves of Iranian attacks. Independent assessments of damage from the latest claimed strikes were not immediately available.
The escalation has contributed to heightened tensions across the Middle East. Oil prices have shown upward pressure in recent sessions amid concerns over supply disruptions. Regional governments, including those in the Gulf, have urged de-escalation while monitoring developments closely.
Iranian officials have framed the strikes as legitimate self-defense in response to U.S. actions. U.S. officials have previously described Iranian attacks on American assets in the region as escalatory.
Further updates are expected as both sides continue operations and assessments of the latest strikes are conducted.
