KUALA LUMPUR, April 15, 2026 — A total of 277,663.90 square metres of additional green spaces and open areas have been successfully gazetted and permanently protected for the people of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh announced today that 45 additional green and open areas covering this land size have been gazetted through the ongoing efforts of the Special Task Force on the Gazettement of Open and Green Spaces under the Federal Territories Department.
“These areas are now locked in as belonging to the rakyat. The gazettement means these spaces can no longer be arbitrarily converted for other uses and will remain as public spaces for the community, families, and future generations,” said Hannah Yeoh during a media briefing today.

The area of 277,663.90 square metres is equivalent to 27.76 hectares or approximately 39 football fields, providing a significant addition to ensure city residents continue to enjoy a healthy, safe, and balanced living environment.
Facing increasing urban density and development pressure, the MADANI Government has chosen to protect — not sacrifice — these green spaces, which are the rights of the people.
“This is an important step towards turning Kuala Lumpur into a ‘sponge city’ — a city that is not only more flood-resilient but also cooler, more comfortable, and more liveable for daily life,” she emphasised.
With the addition of these 45 areas, the total number of gazetted and protected green and open spaces now stands at 539. Previously, on February 5, 2026, Hannah Yeoh had announced the gazettement of 494 areas.

This initiative is being driven systematically by the Special Task Force, which has a clear mandate to identify, evaluate, and accelerate the gazettement process in a transparent and timely manner. More areas are currently being identified, and further announcements will be made from time to time.
Members of the public can check the full list of gazetted areas via the official portal of the Federal Territories Land and Mines Office at: https://www.ptgwp.gov.my/portal.
The announcement has been welcomed as a continued commitment by the government to maintain the balance between development and environmental sustainability in the capital city.
